SO I WAS INSPIRED TODAY WHILE COMMENTING ON A FRIEND'S STATUS ON FACEBOOK AND THIS WAS MY REVELATION....
SAY NO TO HAIR DRUGS!!!!
YOU MANY BE ASKING: 'HUH ?? WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY HAIR DRUGS??'
WELL LADIES... FIRST LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT THE DEFINITION OF THE WORD "DRUG".
DRUG: 1. a chemical substance that affects the processes of the mind or body.
2. any chemical compound used in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of disease or other abnormal condition. 3. something and often an illegal substance that causes addiction, habituation, or a marked change in consciousness.
You may be thinking: "Well, aren't some drugs good for you though?" Yes, most are and some aren't; just the way it is. So ladies, the hair drugs that I am referring to are: Relaxers, Flat Irons, and Sulfate Products. These are a few drugs that can cause damage to the health of your hair. In the definition it states that it is a 'chemical compound that is used to treat, diagnose, or prevent abnormal conditions'. The first lye relaxer was commercialize in 1971 and African-Americans started to notice how it drastically changed their hair from curly to straight. It became extremely popular and the word had spread quickly about this chemical miracle. Ever since then, most black women having been altering or treating the natural form of their hair with relaxers. Since society seemed UN-accepting of the natural beauty that natural hair betrayed on black women, most women "treated" their natural curls with relaxers to "prevent" being treated differently. You can look at this as if, although it may seem cliche, women were diagnosing an illness and that was afro/curly/kinky/hair with a hair drug known as relaxers.
You may be declaring "Oh c'mon Jasmine! Don't take it that far now! You're over exaggerating!" But come on ladies. If you really think back in the day when were all relaxed, man it was like we were addicted to the 'white creme' substance! If we saw even 1/2 an inch of new growth, we would freak out and run to get a relaxer! IT WAS AND STILL IS CONSIDER A HAIR DRUG! We were addicts and thought that relaxers were a blessing from God! According to eHow 'lye straightened hair by weakening the internal protein structures of the hair, loosening the natural curls'. Yes ladies, if it's not the real thing then it's not real at all. The same goes for straightening combs/flat irons. It can alter the real curl/kinky/wavy pattern; depending on HOW you straighten it. Now, I can say I do straighten my hair every 4-6 months just to do a length check; but, every week is a no no. It doesn't hurt to straighten it once a month either if you want to change it up a bit, but every week and every day?? Please don't do it! I prefer doing wash and goes every chance I get and try to avoid blow dryers as well. Keep it kinky, keep it REAL!
As far as sulfate products, they are can cause harm. Every sulfate product I have used has caused dryness, brittleness, coarseness, all that NESS. What is sulfate anyways?? I mean inform me please because I really don't know. And honestly we do not produce or manufacture these hair products, so how do we really know what SULFATE IS. How do we know what all those other "hard-to-pronounce" chemicals are as well. WE DON'T. There's no telling what they're doing to our hair follicles. I've "heard" that some sulfate products can be healthy for the hair but I'm very suspicious of that. So, I proclaim Say No to Sulfate if you can! If you do decide to use it, only use it once a month like as a clarifying shampoo/conditioner.
With all that said, keep it authentic, valid, original, and most of all REAL. Natural is the only way to go. BE YOU! Did you have relaxed, pressed, or sulfate hair the day you were born?? I didn't think so! So, let's keep it Au Naturale :-). Trust me, HAIR REHAB HAD NEVER FELT BETTER!
